Scheduled for completion in September of 2015, the renovated and expanded Cabell Library will be a focal point for the center of the VCU Monroe Park Campus. The new facility will feature 93,000 square feet of new space, and includes renovations on 63,000 of existing space. The project budget is set at $50.8 million.
The design is focused on a student-centered learning environment, which embraces academic study, technology, collaboration, social learning, and online learning. Cabell is the busiest library in the Commonwealth of Virginia, boasting more than two million visitors annually. Ninty percent of the new space is designed for student and faculty use, rather than materials. The new space will feature a dedicated graduate and faculty space, a media creation space, an expanded Starbucks, instructional spaces, and art space. The building design is target towards LEED Silver certification.
