Scheduled for completion in September of 2016, the renovated and expanded James Branch Cabell Library will be a focal point for the center of the VCU Monroe Park Campus. The new facility will feature 93,000 square feet of new space, and includes renovations in 63,000 of existing space. The project budget is set at $50.8 million.
The design is focused on a student-centered learning environment, which embraces academic study, technology, collaboration, social learning, and online learning. Cabell is the busiest library in the Commonwealth of Virginia, boasting more than two million visitors annually. Ninty percent of the new space is designed for student and faculty use, rather than materials. The new space will feature a dedicated graduate and faculty space, a media creation space, an expanded Starbucks, instructional spaces, and an art space. The building design is targeted towards LEED Silver certification.
